Coffee Roasters around the island were invited to attend a two-day seminar by Konnect Marketing. The seminar was held at the Stoneleigh Coffee factory up in the hills of Mavis Bank, Jamaica. Some of the companies that attended the seminar included Greenwich Coffee, Mavis Bank Coffee, Salada Foods, Jamaica UCC Coffee Company, Paradise Coffee out of Cayman and a representative from the Coffee Industry Board. The seminar was conducted by: Mr. Stephen Diedrich, of Diedrich Manufacturing Inc, Diedrich Coffee Roasters and Coffee Roasting Equipment.
The seminar was planned around the theme “Roasting, an art, a Science, perfected with technology” and provided a forum for all stakeholders of the coffee roasting sector in Jamaica and Cayman who chose to attend. The seminar focused on the chemistry of coffee roasting, roasting technology, physical and chemical changes as well important chemical reactions occurring during the roasting process.
Also, the seminar included detailed discussions and presentations on practical applications to roasting control, profiling with hands-on roasting with the Diedrich Automated Coffee Roaster along with cup tasting sessions.
The purpose of the seminar was to provide a platform to make coffee roasters aware on ways to improve the roasting of local coffee to bring it up to international standards. By continuously improving on our processes, Jamaican coffee has the potential for a greater chance for sustainabilty and competitive advantage in the international coffee market in the future.
